Despite low-interest rates, mortgage payments have become increasingly unaffordable for the average American family, according to a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. Despite lower mortgage rates, homeowners and potential homebuyers are not contacting their lenders because of other obstacles.

According to the Atlanta Fed, a median-income household must spend 32.6% of its yearly income on a median-priced home. Additionally, existing-home prices reached a record level in June 2021. The three-month average climbed above $340,000, up 23.8% from June 2020. The Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted index shows that the volume of mortgage applications fell 2.5% last week compared to the previous weeks.

 

The report that has been released on Thursday by Freddie Mac’sabout the nationwide survey shows that: “First time since 1971, the 30-year mortgage rate dipped below 3 percent, according to the government-backed mortgage finance firm.”
